A message to the editor. Written by Adam Pensel:

Dear Editor:
Iıve been around boats all my life.  I love boating and Lake George.  Itıs one of my favorite things to do.  Recently, we bought a jet ski.  Nothing out of the ordinary, a Kawasaki 1100 STX.  Itıs not a four stroke, so itıs a little noisy, but nothing as bad as a speedboat with captains call flying by your house at 11:00 at night.  I think that protesters who want to ban jet skis should rethink their position.   This will be my second year having a jet ski.  Itıs a blast, and I try to be cautious, but thereıs always someone out there who wants to have you busted, because of the stereotyping done on the PWCıs.  First of all, the 500 ft. from shore law, in my opinion, is ridiculous.  Is anyone going to be swimming 500 ft out from their house?  They shouldnıt be.  And if they were, what are they more likely to get hurt on?  A jet ski with an enclosed prop that has maybe 3 inches of hull in the water, or a motorboat which has more like a foot of hull and a stern drive system with exposed propellers?  That law has never made sense to me.  People get mad when they see a jet ski within 300 ft of their house, and they donıt concentrate on the boats that fly past within 50 feet.  Just the other day, I had someone cut me off in the 5 mile an hour zone, on purpose.  I watched them laugh as they drove by me.  Although regular people treat jet skis bad, Iıve even seen the Lake George Park Commission ignore a rental boat flying through a 5 MPH zone, so they could pull over a jet ski, who was about 400 ft instead of 500 ft away from shore, and itıs not easy to tell such a far distance.
I guess Iıve heard people want to ban jet skis for other reasons.  One reason Iıve heard is that they ³stir up nature swamp land.²  Banning jet skis is a little extreme for such a matter.  Laws can be made up that can just restrict them from going into those areas.
Editor, I think that you will agree with me that not all jet skiers are bad kids who want to,²cause a ruckus.²  Some of us are very responsible, and have worked hard to earn the trust of our parents, and of other people.  Most of the people who create problems are the people out on rentals, who donıt know how to use and control boats and jet skis.  All I ask of the anti-jetski protesters, is to take a ride on one before they make up their mind, and if theyıre still against them, all I know is, we aren't going down without a fight...
Sincerely,
Adam Pensel, Spencer Knox
